Spiritual Atmospheres

The spiritual atmospheres around us is energized with good and evil.  As born again Christians we are responsible for energizing the atmosphere with the life of Jesus.  In times of revival such as at Pentecost, the Great Awakenings in America, the Welch Revival, Cainridge Revival, and Azusa Street, the spiritual atmosphere is charged with the Life and power of Jesus Christ.  Think about Pentecost, five thousand came in from Peters preaching at one time? From a man who had never preached before.  In the First Great Awakening fifty thousand souls were being saved a week.  In these times darkness is vanquished over large areas. It would be great if it was like this at all times, but “fortunately for us it isn’t”, because we must go through tribulation, with perseverance over and over again for maturity, which brings hope, resulting in the love God and transformation.(Rom 5:2-5) We see what happen not long after Pentecost, great trial and tribulation came to those of the faith and many fell away.  In Phil 2:19-21 Paul informs the Philippians that he had no one like minded who sincerely cared for them accept Timothy whom he would send to them, all others sought their own well being. Likewise in 2 Tim 1:15 – This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

Understanding spiritual atmospheres helps us to understand Gods purposes and sovereignty over all things for the working out of all things to the good, to those that love Him and are called according to His purposes.  There is a Greek word used sparingly in the New Testament that helps us to understand spiritual atmospheres.  That Greek  word is “energeo” which is to be operative, be at work, or put forth power.  It’s English counterpart is energy which means the capacity for vigorous activity or available power.  Gal 5:6 – For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith “working” through love. 2 Cor 4:12 – So then death “works” in us, but life in you. In these two scriptures “energeo” is the word “working” and “works”.   Energeo is also found in reference to the sons of disobedience.  Eph 2:2 – in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now “works” in the sons of disobedience. The two spiritual atmospheres are that of the power of sin and death, whose master is the devil and the power of resurrection life in Jesus Christ.  Both war for the affections of all mankind.  It is through our choices that either one or the other will prevail, but God is still in control, advancing His purposes and that of the chosen for the building up of His house. Matt 16:18 – And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Isa 45:7 – I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. The Spiritual atmosphere of sin and death is not as evil as it appears, it has a purpose.  Remember God causes all things to work together to good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Rom 8:28) Matt 22:11-15 – “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.  12) So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.  13) Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14) “For many are called, but few are chosen.”  The purpose of evil is to separate the chosen from the called.  Matt 7:13-14 – Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14) Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. The word straight means to have obstacles that close in and cause groaning and the word narrow means to press.  It runs counter to our natural inclinations.  Wide and broad  means spacious and broad or wide.  Natural inclination will take us down a wide path that will not lead to eternal life.  Any teaching in the church that tries to bypass suffering is from the father of lies and meant to separate the called from the chosen.  Rev 17:14 – These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.  God’s purpose for evil is for the judgement of our flesh, allowing persecution, and tribulation in suffering.  This weaponizes us against the devil.  Weaponize means to take something that is harmless and strap something dangerous and explosive on it.  Like a terrorist strapping a bomb on and becoming a suicide bomber. In prevailing in suffering we are weaponized by the Spirit to terrorize the devil.  Ps 2:12 – Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him. Kiss not only means to kiss, but also means to “arm with weapons”.(Ps 78:9)  Rom 16:20 – And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.  The purpose of the Son of God is manifest in us to destroy the works of the devil through us. (1 John 3:8)  Even when we are persevering under intense trials we are winning.  It is in our own death that Christ is being put on to destroy the works of the devil.  This energizes the atmosphere in us and around us with the power and authority of the kingdom. 2 Cor 4:7-12 – But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8) We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed —  10) always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11) For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12) So then death is working in us, but life in you. Our death energizes the life of Jesus in us and around us to destroy the works of the devil.  We live to die and die to live.

2 Thess 1:3-8 – We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 4) so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations  that you endure, 5) which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; 6) since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, 7) and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.  All those things we suffer at the hands of others and continue to walk in His love with patient endurance, without offense, without complaining, or without vilifying the offender come for our refining as silver and purifying as gold.  All this evil comes from the evil one and those caught in a snare to do his will.   To those being saved it is eternal life to those not being saved and to those helping the devil to do our refining it will be to their destruction, unless through our own prayers and intercession that God may grant them repentance.(2 Tim 2:25-26).  Zech 13:8-9 – And it shall come to pass in all the land,” Says the Lord, “That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, But one-third shall be left in it: 9) I will bring the one-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.'”

Matt 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  15) Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Our light must shine in the darkness that is on the earth and not let it prevail over us.  Matt 11:12 –  And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
