First Love Defined

Rev 2:4-5 – Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.  5) Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place — unless you repent.  It can be seen that these Christians in Ephesus had a great zeal for works, but it is evident that God was not please with this vain zeal.  There zeal had no content founded on the purity of the spirit.

My testimony is found on our home page under “About Us”.  This explains what happen to me when I was born again and how I left my first love.  Most Christians today walk away from first love not even knowing it.   First love comes at the initiation of being born again.  John 3:3 – Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  John 3:6-8 – That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7) Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’  Being born-again is a supernatural influx of the Spirit of God into our lives, which offers us a new heart and a new spirit. Ezek 36:26 – I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I could feel a transformation when I got born-again.  There was a love for Jesus that enveloped me and a zeal that made me want to share about Him with others.  My personality was one of an introvert and this was outside my nature.  Something supernatural happen inside of me.

First love combines “agape” love and “phileo” love to create a passionate unyielding love for Jesus.  Agape is the Greek word used many times for the love of God in New Testament scripture.  Agape love is described as a deliberate decision of the will towards principle, duty and moral conduct based upon the character and nature of God. Phileo love is what God has given all mankind, which is to have a fondness or affection for.  It also denotes a personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling.  Phileo love without agape love to constrain it results in great evil and harm in the world today.  Mankind’s choice to reject God is a rejection of His love (agape) which is needed to constrain our passions.  1 Cor 16:22 – If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!   God has no desire to curse mankind.  Creation is established upon a foundation of the “Word of God”.  This word is God and the word is Jesus who is the exact representation of the Father who is love (agape).  If mankind rejects God and the free gift of Jesus Christ they will be cursed to live with their own affections driven by sin and the devil, which brings chaos and all forms of calamity both from mankind and nature which has been subject to futility, because of mankind’s rebellion. (Rom 8:19-21)

I walked away from my first love, because of my own ignorance and the absolute lack of discipleship and teaching on first love to establish my affections on Jesus Christ as my number one priority.  Instead I got involved in church and began to labor hard in church activities, prayer and reading the word mostly as a means of being approved by others and fitting into a church family.  My affections were towards their approval rather then towards Jesus.  This is what I did in the world for acceptance.  If this is not routed out of the Christian when they first come into Christian faith they will walk away from first love and either become very religious and hard or backslide.  It is the love of God that bonds us together.  Our acceptance is not based upon our works, but upon the Cross and the blood of Jesus.  If new converts are not taught these very critical points at  the initiation of their faith in Jesus Christ their Christian walk will be in vain.  There is a way to labor as Christians, but many have no understanding of how this takes place.  Labor is done against our will, but yet brings great joy and comfort of the Holy Spirit as well as progressive maturity.

If it was not for a personal visitation of God at a very critical time in my life, after walking away from first love, I would have walked away from my Lord whom I loved and didn’t know I had also fallen away from.  There are many Christians out there today who’s Christian walk feels empty and they are wondering why they feel the way they do, unknowingly, they have walked away from their first love.
