God is love. 1 John 4:8 – He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:16 – And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. Genesis 1:26 tells us that we were created by Him in His image and His likeness. It would seem to me that it is His ultimate desire that His children would walk in that same love. The following scripture speaks of Jesus being the exact representation of His nature. God’s nature is expressed in who He is, love. Heb 1:3 – And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. God is holy and He is righteous and pure, however, it is His love that makes Him such.
The life of a born again Christian should be directed by the Holy Spirit to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Rom 8:29 – For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. The Greek word for image involves the two ideas of representation and manifestation. Perfection doesn’t lie in the word itself, but must be sought from the context. Perfection can only be attained in the essence of who He is and He is Love. Love is brought to us through the active participation in living our life abiding in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23) gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Faith that works through love initiates the grace of God. This grace compels us to walk in the fruit of the Spirit and in so doing the Holy Spirit mortifies the deeds of our flesh and we take on in our flesh the manifest presence of Jesus Christ. (Eph 2:8, 2 Cor 5:14, Gal 5:6, Rom 8:13, 2 Cor 4:10-11)
